The trailer focuses in part on Biles' decision to abruptly step away from Team USA midway through the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She said at the time she was focusing on her mental health.
In a September 2021 interview with The Cut's Camonghne Felix, Biles reflected she "should have quit way before Tokyo," citing the prolonged strain the Larry Nassar scandal had on her. The 27-year-old announced in 2018 she was among the gymnasts who had been sexually abused by Nassar.
Biles returned to competition in August 2023 and almost immediately reclaimed her throne as the best female gymnast in the world. At the 2023 World Championships last fall, she won individual gold medals in the all-around, balance beam and floor competitions while helping the United States retain its team title.
Simone Biles Rising, which premieres July 17 just ahead of the Summer Games, chronicles how Biles put herself on course to compete in Paris and potentially medal in a third successive Olympics.
